The trick to saving anything is not to spend If you earn 5 gems a day on average, spend no more than 4. The extra one will slowly build up. If you earn 20 gems a day on average, spend no more than 10.
Don't speed up food Only speed up breedings if they have less than an hour or two to go before sleep claims you. Only speed up hatchlings if you need the space urgently. Don't speed up buildings. The extra earnings for a few hours extra really aren't worth it. Don't level up dragons with gems. The food WILL come. Make the occasional karma purchase
Delay necessary gem purchases until there is another benefit. I bought several habitat upgrades, and upgraded my storage tower during the festival. That way I got ffs for my gems as well as something useful
Set a goal. For some time, my primary goal has been to be able to afford to buy ANY dragon. I had just made it in my big park when they announced e ff festival. Now I need another thousand or so gems again. Oh well. Something to strive for.

For some reason even though I want the event to end for me since it has been a long time of this firefly collecting, I think I am just going to try to get as much of the 140 fireflies after reset as possible since 140 fireflies is equal to 28 gems after the turn in.
Hopefully it does reset and I don't lose out on the Twilight Tower by accident. I know the in game countdown (which I had used for the wiki too) has 10.5 more hours on it than the Double Fireflies.
Also, the Double Fireflies are scheduled to leave in around 2 hours for anyone still wanting to take advantage of the deals.
Does anyone know (or can advise from previous events) whether there is likely to be an opportunity to purchase or acquire any FF items that aren't attainable during the event?
There just isn't enough time left for me to acquire all items without significant outlay to buy FF.

From previous events, the trend is that the special items are exclusive to the event. The only thing that can be considered an exception is the Gemstone Habitat, but even in that case, the buyable Gemstone Habitat (at 150 gems!) has a slightly different appearance from the one redeemed during the Easter Egg Hunt. So I'd say that most likely you won't be able to acquire any rewards from this event after the final timer runs out.

Ok nvm. I guess I accessed my park right before the double ff ended but after my park reset. I got a few double ffs. But once I closed the app and opened it again it went back to normal. Oh well.

YuP! Players could still collect double fireflies even though the timer shows "expired". Was able to collect double fireflies for few activities and then when I came back to my park after visiting a friend, the special banners were removed from buttons and no more double fireflies.
We still have approximately 10.5 hours to collect fireflies from the new cycle. Koala, everyone!

Were you playing DragonVale when the timer showed "Expired"? I think only players whom were playing DragonVale that time were able to get the fireflies but once they close the application or visit a friend, it would not work later.
Aha! I'd mixed it up with the time of my ff reset. I was asleep when the timer expired. That explains it. I sill hopefully get lots of gems back though, once that happens I can assess the event fully.

Ok I am extremely confused, it's augest 4 and the FF festival is still going for me. I thought it ended on augest 3 and if u didn't spend any extra FF, you would get a gem for every 5 FF. Anyway on augest 2 I got enough FF for the dusk dragon but wanted the gems instead so I could get the EBI. Do I have to turn in my FF and then the festival will end? Confused.
I finally turned in fireflies for the tower after collecting all fireflies for today (no double today). I got the tower and 45 gems. I spent about 600 gems through out the Firefly Festival.
I did not collect enough for the tower so will I have to manually turn in my fireflies or will I automatically get the gems at the end of the festival?
Managed to complete the event and have 314 extra fireflies.
Didn't receive anything other than the tower (although I had received the gloaming stone early on). Hopefully BFS can find the missing gems
This seems to be an ongoing situation with several people who inadvertently received the gloaming stone at the beginning of the event. I would email the support department at BFS and I'm sure they will look into it for you if they aren't already.

Cashed my ffs in last night after midnight...didn't want to risk oversleeping and missing the end of the event ;-) Picked up about 300 gems from excess ffs. A nice boost after I spent a whole lot buying display eggs during the gemstone BeB event. I enjoyed this event and love the new dragons plus the ability to keep my park set on dusk!
Approximately 25 more minutes until the Firefly Festival is over!
I decided to go and collect the extra 140 Fireflies this morning to get 28 more gems out of it.
In the end through my game play I ended up with 35 gems from extra Fireflies and spending around 530 gems on getting Fireflies in my park.
I am actually okay with spending those gems since it made it possible for me to get the rewards.
Now I will go back to accumulating gems and trying to get Prism Dragons, a second Dawn Dragon, a second Dusk Dragon, and any other dragons I still need/want until something new comes along.
