Another rift question. The rift alignment cycles through the elements in the order of Plant, Fire, Earth, Cold, Lightning, Water, Air, Metal, Light, and Dark. What happens when I pay to change the rift alignment? Does the alignment cycle resume from where it was before I changed it or does it continue from the element I changed to? If the alignment is Lightning and I pay to change to Plant, will the next day’s alignment be Water or Fire or something else? I am trying to breed a traited Eldritch, but doing it on days when the rift alignment is set to something other than Plant, Fire, Earth, and Cold is not a very good idea. But I’m not sure paying to change the rift alignment is a good idea either. Thanks.

I have never changed my rift alighnment, but I would expect it would go back to the cycle. So if you changed it to Plant from Lightning as you suggest, after your Plant alignment finished it would then go to Water. (The alignment after Lightning).
But, I'm not sure why having the alignment on something other than Plant, Fire, Earth or Cold isn't a good idea when trying to breed Eldritch? The alignment can only make an aesthetic difference to the dragon by giving it the trait (rifty bits). It has no affect on the breeding elements that you require to breed Eldritch. (Plant, Fire, Earth and Cold).

The rift alignment DOES contribute an element to the breeds. I went around and around with adlerist about this during several previous events. When the alignment in my game was set to Lightning and I was breeding dragons for Eldritch that contained only Plant, Fire, Earth, and Cold I got some dragons that also contained the Lightning element. These are wasted breeds. I can spend the etherium to find out what happens after I change the alignment, but I don’t want to if someone already has a definitive answer. Thanks!

The Rift alignment DOES NOT contribute an element. It is a trait. Yes, we discussed this at length, and I thought I made that clear.
The Rift itself is an element. It looks like this
Traits on the dragons and the alignment are just traits. They are not elements. They look like this
If you change the alignment, after two daily resets, it goes back to its original cycle. I used to change the alignment frequently, because I’m trying to unlock all the traits for all the dragons. But since that’s not your goal, as MinyaZ stated, it’s not worth changing the alignment because it doesn’t make any difference while breeding.
The Rift alignment is a trait. Rift traits are not elements. They merely alter the appearance of the dragon. Traits do not affect the breeding outcomes in any way. There is a lot of confusion about this with every event. I cannot stress enough that traits and elements are not the same. Hopefully, players are not using traits to fulfil the element requirements to breed dragons. If anyone has questions about this, please check The Rift section of the Help Desk. Thank you.

Thanks adlerist! My bad!!! I was using Lycan in the Rift because it was my highest level plant and cold, but just discovered it also includes lightning and of course I was breeding on a day when the rift alignment was also set to lightning. Hence the confusion. I do understand the difference between traits and elements, but have a disconnect somewhere about the rift emblem that is shown on a rifted dragon card. I still don’t understand WHEN that rift emblem is going to add another element to my rift breeds and give me yet another triple rainbow dragon. Sorry for being so dense about this!

You’re not being dense at all! It’s good that you’re asking; it may help others as well. If by Rift 'emblem', you mean the Rift element that’s showing in the above image, that will show on the profile card for any dragon bred in the Rift and has a trait. The Rift element will also show on the card for all Rift exclusive dragons (these dragons are listed in the Rift category of the Dragonarium).
Only traited dragons can be breeding parents in the Rift. Therefore, anytime you breed in the Rift, the Rift element is added.

I tend to forget that the rift element counts as an additional element during rift breeding and isn’t just something stuck on that enables the dragon to live in the rift. I wish I had any breeding records to support what follows. What causes confusion for me is the number of unexpected triple rainbow dragons that come out of my rift breeding cave, especially during breeds that involve only three elements. In this instance the rift element provides the missing fourth element, but can this dragon also be traited? Or does a traited rainbow dragon require a four element breed in addition to the rift element? Are there any statistics about this issue? I currently have seven triple rainbow dragons in my park, having bought the first pair during their first event, bred one in the vale, and bred at least seven more in the rift, two of them traited. I kept four of the rift breeds and sold the rest.
Another question is why so many triple rainbows during rift breeding? Since the triple rainbow dragon came to the Vale I rarely get a rainbow dragon and never ever a double rainbow. This is strange because the double and triple rainbows have the same 0.5% breeding chance while rainbow comes in at 1% according to the Compendium. My eight double rainbows were all bred years ago which is lucky because they are hard to get now, at least in my park.

ANY dragon bred in the Rift can receive a trait. There’s no requirement that only certain elements must be present, or that some elements don’t count.
The frequent appearance of Triple Rainbow is all RNG. I’ve rarely received Triple Rainbow since its release.

Not the answer I’m looking for which means I’m asking the question the wrong way. I want to think about this for a bit and break it down into smaller parts that fit together more easily. Thanks!

You have a 0.5% chance of getting a Triple Rainbow, at best, in the Rift. Because breeds happen instantly, you can come across them much quicker than you can in the regular park. I don't know what counts as an unexpected number, but I absolutely recommend you keeping track of your breeds and posting in the "What are the Chances?" thread. Would love to look at some actual data.
In this instance the rift element provides the missing fourth element, but can this dragon also be traited?
Absolutely it can be traited. The Rift element is the 4th element, like you said, and any dragon bred in the Rift has a chance of being a rifted version. So the 4 elements make a Triple Rainbow, and there is a chance that Triple Rainbow will also be rifted.
And if the dragon is a rift version, it can have one of the traits of its parents or the current alignment of the Rift.
Or does a traited rainbow dragon require a four element breed in addition to the rift element?
No. You just need 4 elements to make a rainbow. Whether the offspring in the Rift is a Rifted dragon is due to something else in the Rift breeding process.

This is just random chance. I've been breeding all 3 during my attempts. Again, we could start keeping track if you like.

Thanks Fletch! This helps quite a bit. But I’m still puzzled about the relationship between the Rift element and traits. Every traited dragon in DV also requires the presence of the Rift element. But this relationship breaks down in the case of a three primary element Rift breed that results in a rainbow dragon because the Rift element got added as the fourth required element, something that happens only occasionally. Why does this rainbow dragon not carry traits? I can’t think of any other circumstance where the Rift element and trait connection is severed in this way. I do have two traited Triple Rainbow dragons in my Rift that I’m pretty sure were four primary element breeds that had the Rift element added. Hence my curiosity and questions. I will try to keep track of my Rift breeds so there will be additional statistical data. Thanks again.

The Rift element is an element, like the water element, or the Apocalypse element. Just because the breeding parents have an element, the element is not always transferred to the offspring. For example, if you breed Mud (earth, water) + Zombie (apocalypse, plant, air, metal), you can have offspring that do not have the water element (like Tree), or offspring that do not have the apocalypse element (like Tree, Iron, etc).
Every single time you breed in the Rift, you’re using dragons that have the Rift element, so the Rift element is added to every single breed (it’s not different for Rainbow dragons). But similar to the water and Apocalypse elements, that doesn’t mean the Rift element is automatically transferred to the offspring. Therefore, sometimes you’ll have dragons with the Rift element and a trait, and sometimes you won’t.

It may help to think about it as a two step process:
1. Which dragon. In this case, the Rift element + three-element breed gives the chance for a (double/triple) rainbow, along with whatever the normal three elements can conjure up. I would guess that this would also happen if you breed the same combo (of Rifted dragons) in the Vale.
2. Trait. Separate to the above RNG, the offspring may have the traits of one of the parents or of the Rift alignment. Or it might be untraited. This part only works in the Rift.
I may well be wrong about the above but it tallied with my experience

Thanks for the replies! I am looking at the inheritance angle of rift breeding and wondering if there is any way to calculate the odds that one or both parental rift elements will be inherited by the child.
Going back to the untraited three-primary-element triple rainbow dragon I bred in the rift, both parents contributed a rift element to the breed. One of these rift elements was inherited in order to fulfill the requirement for a triple rainbow dragon of any four elements. Am I making a correct assumption that the second rift element involved in the breed was not inherited because the child was not traited? Would both parental rift elements need to be inherited under these circumstances to produce a traited triple rainbow - one rift element inherited as the required fourth element for the triple rainbow dragon and the second rift element inherited to make this a traited dragon? Or can only one inherited rift element provide both the required fourth element AND traits?
Am I looking at this issue correctly? If yes, then does it become feasible to calculate the odds that a rift breed will produce a traited or untraited dragon? A traited dragon requires the inheritance of at least one of the parental rift elements. But an untraited dragon bred in the rift probably means that no rift element was inherited unless it was used in something like the triple rainbow mentioned in the previous paragraph. I hope some of this makes sense.

I’m not sure exactly how you’re approaching this, but you need to keep in mind that a Rifted dragon has both a Rift Element (that purple flag) and a Rift Trait (which can be any of the ten basic elements).
During a three element Rift breed, the presence of the Rift element adds the required fourth element. The fact that there are two (apart from the necessity of having two traited dragons to breed in the Rift) doesn’t really matter - breeding Pollen and Meteor has three elements not four because the Air stacks. In the same way, the two Rift elements ‘stack’. In my head breeding a traited Meteor and traited Pollen in the Vale will have the exact same outcome chances as a traited Meteor and an untraited Pollen. (Chances for a rainbow, no chances for traits)
I think you’re focusing a little too much on which exact elements are inherited and how. I remember someone likening the breeding process to chucking the dragon elements into a bag, giving it a shake and pulling a handful out (metaphor breaks down a little bit with specific breeding combos)
While I think it is possible to calculate the odds of a traited or untraited child, my gut is that it’s separate to the dragon determination. It should be easy enough to work out with enough data but I know i don’t keep track

Maybe it would help to think that none of the parental rift elements are inherited by the child. All they do is offer an extra element, which might be used to make a rainbow dragon. If the child dragon has a rift element, it got that from the rift breeding cave itself.
That's why 2 rifted dragons that breed in the regular park will never result in a rifted dragon (even though the rifted element can help produce a rainbow dragon). The rift breeding cave is required to produce a rifted offspring. And, by the design of the game, both dragons that can breed in the rift, must have the rift element. A breed in the rift breeding cave is not being checked to see if the dragons share a rift element, because they both have to. Therefore the chance of the breed being rifted or not, is entirely independent of the parents. It is just some math that occurs when calculating any breed in the rifted breeding cave.
Am I looking at this issue correctly? If yes, then does it become feasible to calculate the odds that a rift breed will produce a traited or untraited dragon? So it is possible to calculate the odds, but it has nothing to do with the child inheriting the rift element from a parent. The rifted option happens in the rift breeding cave, and then one of the traits available is inherited. But calculating the odds can be worked out by counting how often a rifted dragon is bred versus a non-rited one. If we started tracking those numbers, we could come up with the answer, that an unrifted breed will occur 1 time in x.

A traited dragon requires the inheritance of at least one of the parental rift elements. But an untraited dragon bred in the rift probably means that no rift element was inherited unless it was used in something like the triple rainbow mentioned in the previous paragraph. I hope some of this makes sense.

Thanks! This is exactly the answer I needed. I somehow missed the bit about the breeding cave determining the rift/normal attribute of the result. It seems somehow redundant to me that BFS introduced both the rift element and traits as separate entities to rift dragons. You never find one without the other. It could have been enough to specify that if a dragon is traited then it also has the rift element by default (which could have remained hidden) without having to add a new rift element alongside the primary elements. But BFS didn’t ask me. And it didn’t help that I took almost a year off from the game shortly after the rift was introduced. Thanks again.
oblemommy asked: Did they hide something new in the Ethereum when they allowed more habitats in the rift? There's that row that's locked between solid Ethereum and I don't want to waste Ethereum just clearing them out! I'd rather buy more habitats!

This is so cool! I didn’t even notice my habitats were earning more lol. In an hour it makes 400? Or in 2 hours it makes 400? IIRC the habitats would be at the cap in half the time so I tried to play the game a lot.
