A question - with apologies in advance if I am opening a can of worms. Just consider the source.
Earlier in this event I learned that when breeding traited dragons, the Rift contributes an additional unknown element of its own to the breeding pair which is how I was able to acquire a four element dragon (Triple Rainbow) from a three element breeding combo of Coal and Air Rift.
QUESTION: Are the odds of breeding success in the Rift better by:
1. supplying two dragons that are deliberately one element short of the requirement and letting the Rift element contribute the missing element,
-OR-
2. supplying two dragons that provide all the required elements with the Rift element providing an additional unneeded element?
EXAMPLE: I want to acquire a three element Riptide dragon in the Rift which requires Water, Dark, and Air elements. Am I better off breeding Water Rift and Air Rift (with the Rift element supplying the missing Dark element) or breeding Bubble (Air and Water elements) with Dark Rift?
According to Quil’s Compendium, Riptide does not show up in the results when breeding Water Rift with Air Rift. The only dragons in the results are those with the Water and Air elements. When I breed Bubble with Dark Rift, Riptide does show up in the results, but Rainbow, Double Rainbow, and Triple Rainbow also show up and the rainbows are all four element dragons.
Am I missing something here? Does anyone have an easy answer to this Rift breeding question? Thanks for reading this far.
Obijuan, the Rift is an element, in the same way that treasure is an element for the Treasure dragons, or dream is an element for the Dream dragons. They are not a primary elements.
That’s why earlier in the event, when you bred Coal + Cold Rift in the Rift, you received Triple Rainbow. The two dragons have a total of three elements, and the Rift contributed the fourth element. Similarly, in the Vale, you can breed Gold (which contributes fire, metal, and treasure) + Air, and end up with Triple Rainbow. Gold’s treasure element adds the fourth element to meet Triple Rainbow’s breeding requirement.
Breeding in the Rift isn’t any different than breeding in the Vale, except that the Rift element is added to every breed, so there’s a chance you could end up with a traited dragon.
As far as breeding percentages go, sometimes the Rift percentages are slightly different from the Vale (usually for cloning), but that depends on each dragon. There isn’t a set rule that the Vale percentage is higher or lower than the Rift percentage.
I understand that the Rift *DOES* count as an additional element when breeding in the Rift. My recent question is about breeding percentages. Is it to my advantage to deliberately specify two breeding dragons that are one element short of the requirement and let the Rift element fill in for the missing element? Or am I better off supplying all of the required breeding elements and ignore the Rift element? In the first case, I have a one in ten chance per breeding attempt of the Rift element providing the needed element for the desired outcome (assuming ten elements). In the second case, the Rift element is superfluous and adds either a duplicate needed element or nine unwanted elements to my breeding chances. The second case would theoretically reduce my chances of breeding the desired dragon by adding an additional unwanted element and all of the associated possible outcomes. The first case reduces the number of elements in play during breeding and should provide fewer potential outcomes and a better chance of breeding the desired dragon. Is the difference statistically significant? I hope I am explain my logic (or lack thereof) clearly enough. Thanks!

The Rift is not a primary element. It does not contribute any primary elements to the breeding outcomes. The Rift is an element like how Treasure is an element. Treasure (and other epic elements, and the Gemstone, Crystalline, and Galaxy elements), do not add any primary elements.
If you’re trying to breed a Rainbow dragon and its breeding hint is 'any four elements', then yes, it’d be better to use dragons that only contribute three primary elements, and have the Rift count as the fourth element, because you have less breeding outcomes.
But when you breed dragons like Riptide that require specific primary elements, you must have those elements present in the breeding pair. Riptide’s breeding hint is water + dark + air. The two breeding parents together must contain water, dark, and air. The Rift might add a trait, but it’s not a primary element and does not add any primary elements while breeding.
(I’d also like to add, for those who might have a question about traits, Rift traits, whether the trait is on the dragon or in the Rift alignment, are not elements. They are purely for aesthetics to make the dragon look a little different. A plant trait is not a plant element and will not add the plant element to the breeding combo. If you need more info, the Help Desk has a brief Rift section.)
I hope that clears up the Rift a little. Let me know if you have any more questions. Cheers!

That’s it! I was under the impression that the Rift element was a surrogate for a primary element. You cleared this up perfectly. What a star!
Thanks to everyone who posted in an effort to clear up my misconception about the Rift element being the same as a Primary element. I should have tested this in my own game first, but it has been many years since I had a need to breed two single-element dragons in the Rift. Today, I got another normal Triple Rainbow in the Rift trying for Riptide with Abyss and Air Rift. I now have four Triple Rainbows, none of them traited. And I have lost track of the number of Auroras I have bred and sold. Aurora is one of my favorites, but not in my breeding caves! BTW, my first post from yesterday should have referred to a can of wyrms, not a can of worms.
Not a bug or glitch but an observation… Over the last few Events it seems to me the the number of Vortexes (VortIces?) in the Rift has lessened. Anyone else notice this? I don’t know how many there are/were in the first place. Not important, just curious.
There are 12 swirling Rift vortices each day at reset. I haven’t noticed a decrease. I’m still receiving a dozen.
Quick question. Is the next event going to be the summer camp event? Because I seriously need some Ignis pedestals for decorating purposes.
If Deca follow the same pattern as last year, the next event will be a Paradise type event.
That's right. I forgot about the Paradise event. Those are usually really fun, one of my favorites actually. And now since you mentioned it, I remember the camping one comes later. Like around September.
Ah well, guess I'll have to wait a bit for those pedestals. But on the bright side, it's nice to have a goal in mind to work on.

And kudos to Adlerist…. that is the first really clear explanation of how the Rift contributes to breeding that I’ve seen.

I completely agree with windrider about the clarity of Adlerist’s explanation of breeding in the Rift and hope that it will eventually become a permanent part of the forum’s Rift thread. In my case it was far too easy to conflate the Rift as Element with traits. And, in talking with my daughter who has played DV since its debut, she was not aware that the Rift provides an element during breeding. Rift breeding is still a confusing topic. Thanks again, Adlerist.

This info is in the Help Desk’s Rift thread, but it’s not as detailed as the two post adlerist wrote here. adlerist maybe the examples you gave could be added. I looked at the Rift thread and it might be redundant to add your posts so that’s why I thought just the examples about breeding a rainbow dragon in the Vale with three elements + treasure element, and breeding a rainbow dragon in the Rift with three elements + the Rift element. That would help to show how the Rift element is like the Epic elements.

I can definitely add the extra info to the Help Desk. Thanks for the suggestion, obijuan and samiam!
If anyone else has ideas or requests, please let us know. There’s a lot of information in the game, and I’m sure we didn’t capture it all in the first attempt. We’ll likely have another update to the Help Desk with a wave of additional info in the coming weeks.

Puffles will be rolling out of the Vale at the next reset. He has other things to do and can't stay till the end of the event. Breed or buy yours now. 😊 🐑 🐏
All my friends disappeared on my android device, even though I am signed in to facebook (though they are mostly in-game friends, not fb friends) but they are still on my iPad, is this happening to anyone else?
Nagini, I moved your post to the Bugs and Glitches thread and replied to it there.

It usually takes two visits to the Rift to collect all the vortices. They don't usually appear for me on the first visit. 😊
When I go into the Rift within an hour or two of reset there are usually only four or five vortices to begin with. But as I stay in the Rift, more are spawned. I can actually tell (and see) when the others spawn because the Rift freeze for a second and then - poof - there is another vortex visible. It's quite interesting. If I don't visit the Rift until late in the day, I start with somewhere between eight and the full complement of twelve.
Has anyone else experienced this? I'm on an iPhone 11 and it has done worked this way since my first day with the Rift.
