Tis the season for fun and games! The DragonVale Community Forum is hosting a sleigh full of contests and games this winter, including The Spoiler Contest, The Origin Contest, 12 Days of Winter Scavenger Hunt, and a new Guess the Dragon contest — plus, the revival of a Forum feature that allows members to post images!
The Spoiler Contest
The remarkable and endlessly talented Worms created The Spoiler Contest poster!
The Spoiler Contest will reveal the name of an unreleased Snowy Winter Ball dragon. Players guess what the dragon will look like by answering multiple-choice questions. The five players who answer the questions correctly and earn the most points win 100 gems!
But that’s not all! In addition to the gems from Deca, you will receive an animated snowflakes background on your mini profile (see my mini profile) for one month and a special title stating your winning status!
The extraordinary and wildly gifted Hawk created The Origin Contest poster!
The Origin Contest has made a triumphant return! Based on the feedback from Rate a Dragon and the DV communities, eleven dragons that raised the most questions and piqued our curiosity have been selected for The Origin Contest. Choose the correct origin for each dragon from multiple-choice answers, and you could win 100 gems! You will also receive an animated background of stars (see MinyaZ’s profile) for your mini-profile for 30 days and the title 'The Origin Contest Winner'. The contest starts today! Submit your entry on The Origin Contest thread before it concludes on Friday, December 29th at 14:00 UTC (daily reset).
The Scavenger Hunt has returned!
Welcome the holiday season with us! The 21 Days of Winter Scavenger Hunt begins on Thursday, December 21st. Each day will have a new winter dragon hidden among the pages on the Forum. The hunt will take you through all the winter festivities and conclude on January 2nd.
The five members who collect the most dragons will be forever emblazoned on the Scavenger Hunt Hall of Fame. In addition, an animated background of confetti (see LadyJ’s and Worm’s profiles) and a special winner's title will be added to their mini-profile for one month.
Guess the Dragon has arrived!
The Forum has a brand new contest borrowed from our friends at the DragonVale Discord server! Cropped, close-up images of a DragonVale dragon will be posted on the Guess the Dragon thread. Simply identify the dragon in the picture to earn points. At the end of the event, the players with the most points win 30 gems from the Forum's staff members, plus a special glittery animated background (see OboeKade’s and Obijuan’s profiles) for their profile and the title 'DragonVale Expert'. But that’s not all… you can also post your own dragon images! I’ve dusted off the Forum’s Attachments feature so members can post images directly from their device or computer — no need for a third-party image host! Please see the Attachment post for more details. Happy pic posting!

Given the difficulty many members had breeding new limited dragons during past events, players will probably want to have the following dragons in the Vale and/or Rift, or purchase them from the event market (these dragons are spoiler tagged for those who do not want this information). Please be aware, breeding combos may change or be added or removed at any time. Check back to ensure you have the latest information.

Breeding combos are listed alphabetically. They are NOT in the order you’ll need them.
If you would like to discuss these combos or other spoilers, we’d love to hear your thoughts on the Spoiler Chat thread (instructions on how to access the DV Spoilers board and threads). Please avoid posting the unreleased breeding combos and other spoiler content on the event thread or other threads on the Forum. Thank you!
RETURNING EVENT DRAGONS
Element Key: = plant = fire = earth = cold = lightning = water = air = metal = light = dark
NOTE: Elements that are in parentheses are the dragon’s epic elements. The above icon elements are the primary elements that the dragon contributes (also called 'hidden elements' because they are typically not on the profile card). Knowing the contributing primary elements helps players select cloning dragons and prevents unnecessary elements from being added to the combo.
If you have the 'smiles' feature disabled on your Forum account, you will not see the icons. Instead, you’ll see the text 'plant_1', 'fire_1', etc (without the underscore). On a mobile device, the icons may be cut off. Please view the Forum in its desktop version by tapping Desktop at the bottom of the page, or view this page in landscape.

This breeding chart was originally created by tornorr . RayRayYash now oversees it and regularly updates the chart on Discord. It includes images of the breeding hints for all the returning dragons in the event market and their eggs. It is a spectacular resource, and RayRayYash and Tornorr kindly agreed to share it with us. Thank you so much!
The sensational RayRayYash created a second chart for the evolve dragons in this event! This is taking it to a new stratosphere!

All dragons are the best dragons, but some are required for breeding combos (locked breeding combos). Here’s a list of currently available dragons that are in locked combos. You may want to prioritise breeding or purchasing them from the event market.
Dragons to Evolve Coal is needed to evolve to Avarice, Burgaloo, Gulletail, Jadice, Lokilure Gift is needed to evolve to Libretto, Nibwhip, Saccharine, Sugarplum, Trepak
Other Important Items Event Exclusive • Goody's Sugar Shack: allows you to gift three additional DV friends treats
Permanent • Dragonsai Bush: allows you to gift a gem to one additional DV friend • Goody’s Treatery: allows you to gift three of your DV friends treats
(these habitats do not count towards your habitat cap)
Event dragons’ breeding and cloning percentages
UnconsciousOnion added the breeding and cloning percentages to RayRayYash’s breeding chart. The percentages are from Quil’s DV Compendium. Players may be interested in targeting dragons that are easier to breed/clone or selecting a dragon that’s difficult to breed/clone for the final daily reward. (The chart is spoiler tagged for those who don’t want this information.)

You must claim your eggs at the Runic Breeding Caves by January 22nd, 7.00 AM MST (14:00 UTC). It will not be possible to earn additional Iceberries after this time, but the Snow Ball Castle (event market) will remain open so you can spend your Iceberries.
Snow Ball Castle will close on January 24th at 7.00 AM MST (14:00 UTC). Any remaining Iceberries will be converted into DragonCash.

If you’re new to the Runic Breeding Caves, here’s a description and some tips If you’re familiar with the caves, here’s a refresher
WHY ALL THE FUSS?
The Runic Breeding Caves are an event mechanism that allows players to earn event currency. But it’s much different than other features because you can claim dragon eggs from the RBCs to complete your dragon collections. As a result, the RBCs are a beloved part of DragonVale and are always highly anticipated.
Depending on the event, there will either be 5 or 10 RBCs. One RBC is always active. You’ll activate another during the event tutorial, and there’s a Bonus Runic Breeding Cave that will be active during Double Days, and another if there’s a Triple Day. The remaining RBCs need to be activated by a Runestone. You will receive several free Runestones, one during the event tutorial and there may be more from the event’s daily calendar rewards. Any additional Runestones can be purchased from the Market.
If you tap the Info button on a RBC, a description of the cave will appear indicating whether it’s a Bonus Cave for Double or Triple Days.
HOW THE RUNIC BREEDING CAVES WORK
The RBCs are different from the regular breeding caves in several ways:
• When you activate a RBC with a Runestone, it will remain active for one week.
• The breeding times at the RBCs are 75% shorter. So a 24 hour breed will now take 6 hours.
• After you breed an egg, instead of incubating, the egg is added to the Runic Breeding Cave’s Egg History. To access the Egg History, select the Egg History button at a RBC.
• The Egg History applies to all RBCs. If you breed a dragon at one RBC, it will show on the Egg History for every cave, and you can claim the egg at any RBC.
• After you breed a dragon, you’ll receive event currency based on the length of the breed. The amount of currency you’ll earn has changed over the years. Since 2020, for every hour of a dragon’s normal breeding time, you’ll receive 2 event currency, with a maximum of 50 event currency per breed (examples: Lava dragon, which has a 10 hour breeding time, will take 2.5 hours to breed at the RBCs, and will earn 20 event currency. Double Rainbow with a 60 hour breed time will take 15 hours, and payout 50 event currency).
• For every unique dragon you breed at the RBCs, you will receive a bonus of 100 event currency. If you breed the dragon again, there is no bonus. The bonus amount does not increase with Double Days.
• Be sure to keep track of the RBCs you activate. You do not want to activate a cave that has already been activated, since you can claim an egg from every cave that has been activated during the course of the event.
CLAIMING EGGS
• To claim an egg, open a cave and tap the Claims Left button. Choose a Dragon will pop-up, just scroll to find the dragon and tap Confirm.
• You can claim ONE egg from each Runic Cave you activate.
• You can claim the egg at any time, even after the cave has been deactivated.
• You can claim the same egg more than once from a different RBC. This is especially helpful for players who want a twin or traited-twin dragon. The RBCs follow the same pattern as the mystery eggs (regular > twin > traited-twin). You only need to breed the dragon once in any RBC, then you can claim the regular version from one cave, the twin from a different cave, and the traited-twin from a third cave.
• Be sure to claim your eggs before the event island is removed (last day to collect event currency). The RBCs depart with the event island.
• TIP: if you’re claiming a traited version of a dragon, click the Claims Left button at a RBC. The Choose a Dragon menu will show, find the dragon you need, and tap the '?'. The dragon’s info card will show and you can see what the trait looks like on the dragon. If you don’t like the trait, close Choose a Dragon, click the Claims Left button again, and you’ll be offered a different trait. Repeat until the desired trait appears.
STRATEGIES & TIPS
• Wait until the end of the event to make your RBC egg claims. You never know what you’ll breed at the RBCs, Vale, or Rift.
• Since the RBCs reward 100 event currency for each unique breed, target breeding (cloning) dragons with two of the same dragon (e.g., Woolen + Woolen) is an ideal way to earn currency.
• An effective way to earn event currency and breed many unique dragons at the RBCs is to start with dragons that have three or more primary elements or have a locked breeding combo (so they cannot be breeding fails). Check the dragon’s breeding time to see if it fits your schedule. If you can’t login for eight hours, you may want to breed a dragon with a breeding time over 24 hours (it’ll be ready in 6+ hours). If you can visit your park in two hours, select a dragon with a breeding time of 8 hours (it’ll be ready in 2 hours). Be sure to breed two of the same dragon (e.g., Woolen + Woolen). Cloning two of the same dragon has a much higher breeding percentage than using the breeding hint or single cloning (e.g., Woolen + another dragon).
• You will probably want a checklist of all the dragons listed by their RBC reduced breeding time. On Quil’s DragonVale Compendium, there is a Runic Breeding Caves spreadsheet to plan and keep track of your RBC breeds.
• If you don’t have two of every dragon, start cloning the dragons you do have duplicates of that contain more than two primary elements, then move on to single cloning (target dragon + another dragon). Check the Compendium for the dragons with the best single cloning percentages. Breed the permanent hybrids last because you’ll likely accidentally breed them as breeding fails. Primary dragons are the easiest because breeding two will guarantee you’ll receive the primary dragon.
• If you’re new to DragonVale, and don’t have a lot of dragons, breeding two dragons that combined have all 10 primary elements (e.g., Rainbow + another dragon) will yield a wide diversity of dragons. Be sure to use two different dragons. Breeding two of the same will greatly increase your chances of breeding that dragon over and over.
• If you don’t have a lot of the dragons in the event market, you may want to breed the dragons with the lowest breeding percentages at the RBC (check the Compendium for the breeding percentages). Since the breeding time is greatly reduced, you’ll have more attempts than using the Vale breeding caves. Try to breed as many of the event dragon you don’t own in the RBCs, Vale, and Rift. At the end of the event, whichever dragons you were unable to breed in the Vale and Rift you can consider claiming at the RBCs.
• Keep an eye on the RBCs activation timers. Just before an RBC deactivates, breed a dragon with a long breeding time. When the cave expires, the breed will be complete. Insta-breed!
• Before deploying Kairos, try to fill the RBCs with dragons that have long breeding/incubation times. You can use gems to speed up RBC breeds.
• Monolith and Snowflake eggs are identical, so if you need to know which Monolith or Snowflake dragon you bred in the RBCs, click on the Egg History button, then tap the Claims Left button to see the list of dragons.
• If you keep your park in black and white, it’s difficult to notice that a RBC is lit up and activated. This has resulted in some players forgetting to breed in the Double Days cave. You may want to keep your park in colour when the RBCs are in the game.
RUNESTONE INFORMATION
• Depending on the event, five or six RBCs can be activated for free. So if you’d like to claim more dragons, you’ll need to purchase Runestones.
• Runestones can be purchased from the Market. You can buy one, or a _____ of Runestones (3), or a Satchel of Runestones (7). If you want to activate all 10 Runic Breeding Caves, so you can claim 10 eggs, you’ll need to purchase a Satchel of Runestones, and will have several leftover Runestones. You can use the leftovers to reactivate caves and earn more event currency. Or, if you don’t spend them, they’ll convert into 10 gems after the event concludes.
• Once you purchase Runestones, you can use them at any time. Click on a Runic Cave, and in the upper right corner your Runestone counter will show. Tap on it, or on the RBC Breed button, and you’ll be asked if you want to activate the cave with a Runestone.
• Runestones have never been offered at a discount. That doesn’t mean it’ll never happen, but it seems highly unlikely.
RUNIC BREEDING CAVE BUGS
• When using gems to speed up breeding, the gem cost can reset late, or not at all. This is an ongoing bug since the inception of the RBCs. It was reported to Backflip and has been reported to Deca.
• Lunis and Solis cause crashes when they’re successfully bred at the RBCs. As a result, Lunis and Solis are usually unavailable if the RBCs are in the game. Please check the breeding hints and Dragonarium to ensure they’re available before attempting to breed them.
THERE ARE TWO DEADLINES FOR EVERY EVENT
1. Last day to collect event currency 2. Last day to buy items at the event market The Runic Breeding Caves will depart when you can no longer collect event currency, be sure to claim your eggs before then. If you do not, the game will give you Motley eggs!

The DragonVale Community Forum has a feature called Attachments. However, it has been dormant and inaccessible since the Forum reached the storage capacity for Attachments ten years ago. I’ve increased the storage limit for the duration of this event so Forum members can participate in our new contest Guess the Dragon and post images on the Forum's threads of their holidays, parks, and anything else they'd like to share about their festive season!
Attachments will allow members to post images without using a third-party image host. You can now post screenshots and photos directly from your device or computer!
Some important information about Attachments:
• You must be a Forum member and logged in to use Attachments.
• You will need to use the Desktop version of the Forum. The mobile version removes a significant portion of the Forum's features, including Attachments. To access the Desktop version on a mobile device, at the bottom of every page, simply tap 'Desktop' in the lower right corner.
• All attachments are posted as thumbnails. Click on the thumbnail to expand the image.
• Attachments have a limit of 1 MB. The small pics for Guess the Dragon won’t exceed this, but most photos and screenshots will easily surpass 1 MB. See Posting images larger than 1 MB at the bottom of this post to compress the image.
How to add images to your posts using Attachments
Click on the thread you want to post on and click the Reply button in the upper right corner of the thread.
The posting page will open. Type your message. When you’re done, click the Add Attachment button.
The Add Attachment window will open. Click the + Add files… button (outlined in blue). If the image is on your device, select Photo Library. Your device’s photos will open. (From your photos, tap on the image and select Add in the upper right corner to add the image. The layout and text may be different for each device’s photos, these instructions are from an iPad Pro.)
The image will upload. When the loading bar turns green, press the Insert button and the image will appear in your post. Click Done to close the Add Attachment window and the Create Post button to publish.
Posting images larger than 1 MB
Attachments have a limit of 1 MB. If your image is more than 1 MB, use imResizer. This is a free online image compressor that will reduce your image to 1 MB or less without greatly affecting the quality or dimension of the image.
If you have any questions about how to use Attachments or imResizer, please post your queries in try Forum Updates thread or contact an admin or moderator.

Anyone else reminded of the Edward Scissorhands movie when they read Shaper's description? Because that was my first thought. The dark element kinda backs that up too. 💙 ☃️

A BIG thanks to Adlerist as they got DECA to increase the dragon capacity of the Omnitats AND they added the cold element to the Snowflake habitats. SCORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So happy! It's a Christmas miracle! Thanks, Adlerist and DECA!!
Many cheers to Hetchy for suggesting an increase to the Omnitat dragon capacity! Two more dragons can now reside in the habitats. And for requesting the addition of the cold element to the Snowflake Habitats. Thank you to the members, mods, and admins who supported these grand improvements, and many thanks to the Deca DV Team for making it a reality! The game is getting better by the second. Brilliant!
Looks like I’ll finally buy some Snowflake Habitats. Never thought I’d see the day. Eight years ago, I sold the only two I had when I picked up the more advantageous Snowflake Reward Habitats.

Just came to say YAY! Been looking forward to this event for months, and so far I’m not disappointed! I did not have any issues loading up, hopefully they were able to get all the kinks out. Fingers crossed!
FYI— My friend had the event islands DISAPPEAR after a forced reload at the end of the tutorial. She had two Motley dragons in her gifts and the bonus Runic cave was deactivated. 😭. She has made a support ticket!
Now my park has just done the same thing deactivating Runic caves and giving me Motleys. I’m not looking forward to dealing with support since they have yet to resolve the issues from the Halloween event and the Greenhouse event.
