Ratz! I was racing in my small park. I picked a fragment of Gaia, won the race and got a piece of Kairos!!!!! I don't want or care about Kairo! Lolololol
It looks like the race track also has a 'perfect' dragon that awards 2 keys. Each time I picked Tree for Ulster Meadows and got 2 keys 3 times. On my second account, I tried Moss and Forest and only got 1 key. Or maybe I was just lucky with the Tree dragon...
There's some other factor in play, maybe how accurately you click the lines. I got 2 keys the first time but only 1 key the second time using Tree on Ulster Meadows.

For the "Pan Galactic Gargle" quest, I went with Arcturan. Apparently this is a drink at the Restaurant and the End of the Universe (thanks Mr. Adams) that is made with "three cubes of Arcturan Mega-gin" The elements matched up...we'll see if I'm right in 16 hours.

Have come across something I'm unsure of in the racetrack. Got the Marshlands quest in the racetrack requesting Dark + Earth as elements, but the Wiki says the elements are Plant + Water + Earth which makes more sense for a marshland. Which elements would you go with, the game or the Wiki?

I think that's a bug. Same thing happened to me, and I chose Dark/Earth. Wrong call.
I wonder if you can go lower than "great". Like, what if you use completely random dragons that don't even match a single element?
I'm guessing it says "good dragon" if you use an awful dragon so nobody's feelings get hurt. Like how you can't do worse than "good" at the race track.

Thank you everyone who is helping out. It looks like some of my guesses for suggestions that I posted on the wiki thread are true by the looks of comments and replies.
While at work it appears a new table was created here with more information. It is a list of all the dragons at the moment in alphabetical order with just about everything filled in except for the quest titles. Elements and times are all on there.
Hopefully after we have all the titles it can be in quest title alphabetical order to make it easier to locate which dragon is "perfect" for each specific quest.
Also, here is the wiki thread where this is being discussed again if anyone needs it:
None of my races yesterday had pieces in the chests. Today all of my first place races resulted in 1 key each. Seems like I should be whining about my progress so far at the racetrack, but you would be wrong if you thought that. Even though I only had one key to work with each time todays' racing produced 5 pieces added to the puzzle!!! Guess that balances out the skunk racing from yesterday.
I think the Keys are random as I too used Quake in same race and got two keys.
I agree...I think it might be completely random (aside from probably needing to get first place). I tracked dragon used and number of "perfects" and there didn't seem to be any correlation between the number of keys (1 or 2) won (or whether a fragment appeared or not). It would have been nice if there had been a "perfect" dragon for each race to increase the chances of getting fragments. Combining with all of my friends, we've only seen 3 fragment pieces in 50 races so far...this is going to take a while...
Another Quest...Noxious Nuzzles (Air+Plant+Cold), 16 hours. Guessing maybe Okenite...
How frustrating to win two consecutive races, two keys - fragment in the one I failed to choose. Next Race, one key - two fragments in the ones I didn't choose.

Actually I think I got "okay" a few times when I was learning how to race, so worse than "good" is possible there...

I don't think I've ever lost using the Swamp dragon in a Marshlands race.
