And that stat is very interesting, I think. I'll add another observation: My best friend, who go into Dragonvale about a day after I did and who has never particularly hesitated to buy gems, did not choose to buy eggs for the island. And she, like Poppy, is typically a completist, and has never missed getting ANYTHING in game.
She had no problem with the idea that there was an item that you couldn't get without a purchase. Like me, and others, it was the actual amount she balked at, along with the vague approach to calculating that cost that was the only mechanism we had to work with. Had BFS simply offered the island to purchase at $5 upfront, we'd both have bought it, and I'm willing to bet more of all our DV friends would have too.
So it will be interesting to see what happens with the next event!
I've been interested in following this thread and seeing what people chose to do. Your description of your friend is where I settled personally as well. I didn't buy the island even though I could afford it and like to support the devs. If it had been up front "$5 for the island", I'd have bought it. I felt $10 was too high given that I have bought gems multiple times since I started last August, there's the possibility of multiple events a year, and because I disliked the way it was handled. (I'd have been pretty upset if I thought $10 would cover it but then needed another gem or two.)
I am looking forward to the next event, though! It'll be interesting to see what happens next. It was rather nice not to have the bush grind this time but I liked having more opportunities to earn last time. Maybe the next will be a hybrid.

I'm all for a hybrid event myself. Sometimes, I have the time to sit and "work" towards an event. Sometimes, I don't. But I like having the option of having some sense of control over what I earn from a game event, and this event gave me virtually no chance to employ any kind of strategy, or do anything really to change what level I ended up at. It barely increased the amount of time I had to spend in the park.
I took advantage of being able to buy out the first level of the DV 2.0 Magic event last fall, without hesitation and with no regrets. I even bought magic on at least one double weekend deal. Call it $7-8 total during that period. This time, as soon as it became obvious there was going to be a minimum of $10 spent to get the final item available, I knew there was no point in spending anything at all, because that $10 minimum threshold was beyond my comfort limit, especially with no idea whether or not that would have been enough. (And sure enough, in my case, it wouldn't have been. According to BFS, that would have left me ONE EGG short still.)
So instead of making between $5-7 off of me this time around, BFS made $0. Being something of a data fiend, I'd love to see the stats on which event was more profitable, which generated more complaints, and on the demographics of who spent and who didn't. (Yes, BFS, I know that won't be shared & understand why. I merely love to analyze data & business strategy.) I've noticed that many of us who have regularly added to BFS' coffers over the years either didn't buy in for this one, or commented about at least some hesitation to do so versus the price point. Many people who never spent before, or spent minimally in the past, seemed more inclined to write it off as, "Well, it's only $10," and went on to buy it.
From a business standpoint, the ideal event would result in keeping your regular spenders handing you money while adding net new transactions from those who haven't spent in the past (and of course, alienating as few customers as possible, but especially not alienating your repeat customers, as that's where the money is). I suspect--though I obviously can't confirm it--that the first event was more successful at that, even if in the end, the second made more money overall.

The Easter Egg hunt fiasco is finally a past nightmare. I didn't play for almost two weeks afterwards I was so upset. I was most upset that a silly game got me so upset! So after some reality checks and time I am happy to say I have been playing steadily since mid-May. My goals are Much different now.
I wanted to publically thank each and everyone of you who left me comments...I am just now seeing them. And it is all of you that kept me in the game. Gianormous Hugs to you all for caringm Thank you.
I am advising Backflip Studios that to expect someone playing the game to participate in forums or to depend on email notices (which I had turned off and regretfully turned back on after the Egg event) is quite arrogant and unrealistic. Dragonvale may be and should be their lfe but it is merely an interlude for those of us who play. (Granted the degree of seriousness varies widely from player to player). One should be able to play without having to Research the game. I don't have to study up to play Bubble Mania for instance. Leslei (aka reikiquilter)
