Fall of Saigon, April 30, 1975 marked the end of the Vietnam War.
Between 1978 – 1979 continuing into 1990, approximately 2 million Vietnamese fled the country by boats, hence the term Vietnamese Boat People, in fear of retaliation, and repressive force from the North Vietnam regime . Many died at seas, at the hands of pirates, though there aren’t actual count of how many Vietnamese perished at sea, however the estimated number ran from 50 - 100 thousands+, an expensive price to pay for freedom.
My sister and cousin are ones. They were repeatedly robbed. My cousin was brutally beaten by Thai’s pirates - nothing left except torn clothes, opened sea, and the will to live. They were the lucky ones!
If you happened to know a Vietnamese Boat People, ask them their story, chilling stories they shall reveal.
I am thinking: FallofSG
Missing the year...hhmm

Thank you. I am wondering if the years in the name are necessary. I don't think I'm going to remember what dragons stand for what dates, so I will have to look at my table anyway. We'll see.
And my last reply was way too short considering the story you told. I am sorry. What an enormous tragedy the cost of war is, even after the fact. But it makes these personal stories of triumph so amazing and uplifting. Anyone seen or read Unbroken?
I keep meaning to look this up, and finally did... 1 April 1926 is/was the birthday of Anne McCaffrey, the creator of the Pern series of books. Dragons are in there, even if they are the genetically altered cousins of the tiny fire lizards. I was thinking either Pern, or 1926Pern.

Doing a happy dance, as I finally have a fire-breathing sparkly Dragonarium.
Can always use party hat friends, gem friend slots overfilled

Was. Our poor creator has died. But I assure you. I am NOT a fire lizard.

I DO know that. But technically, it is still the anniversary of her birth, and is hence, still her birthday. which is why I put both.
I finished reading Unbroken some time in Aug/Sept last year, and was unaware that the book was made into the movie. I like the book a lot, and cheated in the middle, jump to the end....just want to make sure of a happy ending, and went back to read where I left of..
However, don't plan to see the movie. Have been so disappointed at books made into movies so many times ; can't say the same for the Life of Pi.
Are you familiar w/ Markus Zusak? Yes, I think the answer is? Plan to pick up I Am The Messenger when I get a chance.
Love The Book Thief, I have no plan to rent the movie though, prefer to savor every page of it!
...little surprise that nobody mentioned Jan 27, 1945.
I'm no history buff, but here's one for the turquoise dragon.
March 31- Turquoise- 1921RAAF- The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) is formed. The second oldest Air Force in the world. The Turquoise dragon is an airborne dragon and thought that it was quite fitting.

That's 18 dragons named. Not even a tenth of them. Not even a 20th of them if you count the babies. You must have dates that you remember as important for some reason or another. Post them here and help me name my dragons.
Geode Dragon July 10th- 1856Tesla- Nikola Telsa's birthday. A great inventor and contributor to the who discovered the mechanics of electrical currents.
Mine Dragon February 15- 1564Galeo- Galileo's birthday. The beards have it.
Seasonal Dragon March 14th- 1879Einstn or Einstein- Albert Einstein's birthday. Developed the theory of relativity. I guess it could relate to the Seasonal dragon in a sense that the dragon is still the same dragon, even though its appearance changes
Hail Dragon April 6th- 2012DVC or 2012Aloha- For obvious reasons

June 24 - celebrated as Manila Day ("Araw ng Maynila"). NOT the actual foundation (the place was called "Kuta Sinalubong" as a Brunei satellite), but a day back in 1571 when Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi came and decided it would be the capital (of the Spanish Far East holdings). Also coincides with the Feast of Saint John on the liturgical calendar (traditionally taken as summer solstice). There's a district somewhere there called "San Juan" where it's not advisable to go on that day unless you want to get wet ("baptized"). Or bring an umbrella. Not that it's not pleasant to get wet in summer, but you never quite know where they got the water
I spent years there, Buffy, and I know what you mean about boat people stories. Not that there were any rowing that distance, but by international agreement they put up a boat people processing center where they'd pass before going on to the States. Some of them were picked up by Thai fishing vessels, and some of those adventures were other horror stories... there were no police or coast guards in those waters, and some people behaved like pirates.
PS: Sorry, I forgot the name: Manila. (Kind of a variant on some dragons of mine named after the places they hatched in).
July 4th - 1776FREE or FREEDOM if you don't want to use the year.
In honor of the day we Yanks gave the Brits the heave ho. Or as my British friends like to call it, " The day we got rid of you wankers!" You haven't really celebrated the Fourth of July until you've done it with a bunch of Brits. Most fun ever!
6 Feb (panlong): Waitangi Day, the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, viewed as the founding document of New Zealand. 1840Treaty?
On the same day in 1952 our monarch succeeded her father as head of the commonwealth etc. 1952QEII or 1952QE2
25 April (DR): ANZAC day, for the remembrance of Aussia and Kiwi soldiers who fought at Gallipoli during WW1. 1915ANZAC
