KCfireangel and Cyn, are you both still available for daily gem trading? I lost two of my daily buddies and need new ones. Will add you both but would also appreciate verification that you still have slots for daily trade!
Sorry Skitch, I don't have any trading spots left. I'm happy to add you anyways for party hats etc but I just wanted to check first in case you prefer to keep your friend list nice and streamlined to gem buddies only!
Thank you for responding! I'll leave it up to you, go ahead and accept if you'd like another party hat friend. My list is pretty long from the Last Call competition here, so I'm not worried about keeping it streamlined!
Thanks, dragonmagic1, but I don't use my fb account for gaming and too lazy to keep an extra one for that purpose! Somebody'll turn up eventually.
So, I still have one free slot for a daily gem trading buddy if anybody has space...

My completed payout table is below. If you appear more that once it's because I owe you more than one gem and I'm too lazy to come up with a more clever notation to so indicate. Standard apologies to Daily Gem Buddies (DGB) to whom I may owe an award gem.

Ha, I knew it! Indifference is the key. I forgot to check my breeding yesterday, was tied up with work-stuff all day today, and popped out a surprise Ragnarok just a while ago!
OUT!
...guess I'd better start building my payout table...
A minor success to report: I've been breeding a Sprout and Spring as my secondary pair for Ragnarok. It has a 0.5% chance of success according to the sandbox. This is a pretty low percentage, but my main objective in using this pair has been to attempt to breed a second Sprout dragon (and ultimately a Sprout egg once I have a pair to increase my odds). Happy to report that this pair produced a 28:48 dragon in the EBI this morning which, if the sandbox is correct, can only be a Sprout! Whew! Now I can concentrate on that second Victory...
Still no luck for Ragnarok on my primary pair (Ruin and Lava) though, but you can color me pleased nonetheless!

Based upon my careful scientific observations, I have determined that it is a combination of whining and at least the appearance of indifference. Success is inversely proportional to the game's assessment of your desire for a particular breeding.

Hey, rion (pickin' on you since you were the last mod to edit the OP), note that Greger entered the comp here just before it was closed, but was never added to the entrant list.

I have discovered the missing variable in my attempts to breed a Mirror dragon: inattention! I failed to check the breeding time on my last attempt and was met with a surprise Mirror dragon when I went to hatch the sucker (I was also inattentive to the color of the metal patches on the egg)! So, if you're still trying to breed a Mirror, simply pay no attention to what you're doing, it will certainly be a Mirror dragon*

My discount gem strategy from the previous event still works: Buy a Giant habitat for 25 gems and sell it back for 10 to receive 25 candies for an expenditure of 15 gems.
eta: I should also reiterate one of my other tips as well. For candy counting, download a tally app from your app store and setup categories for each way you can receive candy: eggs, treats, friends, etc. I keep the tally app on my phone and play on my iPad, so it's trivial to just tap the appropriate tally category to keep track of candies received while I play. I also set up a "Start" category to record the total amount I have accumulated in the candy bank each morning so I can verify my tapped count against the actual total throughout the day, adjusting whenever I purchase a reward (makes it easier to figure out what happened if the total is different than what I expect).
I'd like to add a little disclaimer to this strategy. While you get 25 candies for 15 gems, you also do not get any other benefit. So those gems go directly to getting those candies. However, if you spend gems on something like speeding up breeding for example, then you get the candies as well as some other benefit. So if you are low on gems, this strategy may be a good one. But if you have a nice stockpile of gems, it might be better to just use it on speed ups or upgrades.
True, this tip should be applied within in the context of your own situation. Note that it's pretty easy to get to the daily candy cap for most speedup-able (is that a word?) tasks, so really the only time it might be more advantageous to use speed-ups in terms of candy-for-gem expenditures is if you're approaching candy reset without having hit your cap or else you're speeding up for another reason (i.e. trying to maximize number of breedings to get a limited dragon before it goes away, etc.).

I would be VERY surprised if they gave prizes for buying or summoning an island. The price is so high, and the chances of actually being in a position to summon one so low it would tilt the playing further than BFS have demonstrated a willingness for in the past.
That's actually a VERY good point. I think I'm leaning toward buying and summoning, but leaving obstacles untouched for now (I have the will power for that, don't I? DON'T I?!?). Someone pointed out a few months ago that the low density of obstacles in the last island allows for at least a modicum of usability while still leaving them untouched.

I am sad to say that I will be bowing out of this competition. I am having no luck at all with Opal (almost 30 tries, including 6 Geode fails so far!) and want to continue working on it since this new dragon is permanent. Fortunately, I did buy the new Apocalypse habitat before the price went up. I was sure they would not keep the Large the same price as the regular one! I will check periodically and send a gem to the winner once it has been decided. Hopefully I can participate in the next contest!

You may have dropped out, but you were still in when I rolled my dice for the random gifting award clause, so you'll be receiving a gem from me whether you like it or not!

The upside to my continuing failure to produce a Mirror dragon is that the fails have left me flush with cash. At over $3b I finally feel I have enough buffer to buy that pricey last island. The only thing holding me back is the (remote) possibility that the wizards might change things up (as they are wont to do) by awarding event currency for the actual purchase and/or summoning of an island (as opposed to simply the clearing of one). On the other hand, If I wait for the next event it will take a while to build the island, thereby increasing the risk that I won't be able to reap full value from clearing obstacles (assuming they award event currency for this as they have in the past). And I certainly don't have the fortitude to purchase the thing now and leave it wrapped up in its delivery package until a new event (assuming it's the summoning and not the purchasing that gets the reward)!
Any thoughts?

Well, at least one of the clauses of my exciting, non-boring pledge means that I can begin my initial payouts immediately. Luckily (?), one of my (non-DV Community) daily gem-buddies has apparently stopped playing, so I have 2 discretionary gems to award each day until I rectify that situation. To that end, I have already paid two of my random awards, to shotgunsalley and to lemmyloop. Koala!

And so it begins. As promised, here are the results of the dice rolls governing the specifics of my pledge:
A) 1 gem to each competitor still in the running after me (no roll required) B) 3 gems to the winner (1d4) C) 3 gems deep into the runner-up list (1st, 2nd, 3rd runners up) (1d6) D) 5 random recipients rolled from entry list of 29, overs discarded (1d100): 85, 21, 38, 62, 1, 58, 84, 27, 42, 14, 69, 22. Results: shotgunsalley, lemmyloop, magpac, rachels, Adriano E) 1 gem deducted from "boring" creator I have decided to waive this deduction since the provenance is fuzzy...
Regarding point D): I note that Davellan registered his entry before the contest began but has not been added to the list. I have included him in the rolls.
I will update my payout table when/if I drop out and the balance of my debt becomes clear.
